We face two major challenges arising from increased life expectancy today: the aging population and the rise in prevalence of chronic diseases. These trends are driving a series of changes across the pharmacy industry, reappraising the pharmacist\u2019s role in healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With an aging population, lack of treatment adherence is a major community health problem that leads to a reduction in quality of life and poorer disease control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pharmacy care promotes patient engagement with their disease and its treatment and is a key factor in therapeutic adherence. It also lets the pharmacist contribute to care continuity, tracking treatments with a Monitored Dosage System (MDS) where necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, tools like teleconsultations have proven very useful in attending patients quickly, reducing travel to health centers, and risks of contagion. They have also served to reach out and support patients, making them feel more secure and in control of their disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What will the pharmacy of the future look like?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The pharmacy of the future will be one that is flexible regarding changes and which onboards new technologies designed to improve pharmacy care. Tech solutions targeted at information management will be key in the physician-pharmacist relationship, enabling more streamlined and efficient actions. Tools like teleconsultations are here to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also important to note that the role of the pharmacist will become increasingly more important as the population ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, another added value will be ongoing pharmacist training to improve professional skill sets and offer quality healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
